How much to charge for a gingerbread house
At an example $15 an hour and a 40% margin, a classic 6 x 8 x 4 inch house with simple decoration sells for $100.49. A small 5 x 6 x 4 inch house is $70.16 and a large 8 x 10 x 6 inch house is $159.34. Decorating up to a showpiece raises the classic house to $171.99. Ingredients are only $8.06 of dough and icing in the classic house, so the price is mostly your hours.
Price by size and decoration level
The sizes are the three presets on the gingerbread house template generator (45 degree roof). The dough and icing dollars are the ones on its cost to make page: the Food Network Kitchen dough scaled to the pieces, with September 2026 BLS prices for flour ($0.545 a pound), sugar ($1.019 a pound) and eggs ($2.272 a dozen). My estimates are the candy, the board and box, and every minute count. Every row uses $15 an hour, 10% overhead and a 40% margin.

- Simple: icing on the roof and a few candies by the door. Candy is 1 times the template page's candy amount ($3, $6 and $10 by size).
- Detailed: a candy-covered roof, trim, windows and a door. Candy is 1.5 times the template page's candy amount ($3, $6 and $10 by size).
- Showpiece: piped detail, melted-candy windows and a styled scene on the board. Candy is 2.5 times the template page's candy amount ($3, $6 and $10 by size).
Minutes are building plus decorating. Building covers cutting the pieces, baking, cooling, assembling and letting the icing set: 75, 105 and 165 minutes for the three sizes. Decorating adds 30, 75 or 150 minutes to the classic house. These are guesses, so time your first house and replace them. Board and box are placeholders, and the base board size page says what size board each house needs.
What buyers see
A buyer comparing your house with others sees ranges like these, which latestcost.com lists (opened 2026-10-20):
| Kind of house | Low | High |
|---|---|---|
| Small bakery house | $25 | $75 |
| Footprint of 4 to 6 inches, custom | $25 | $60 |
| Footprint of 8 to 12 inches, custom | $75 | $200 |
| Detailed, made to order | $75 | $250 |
| 12 inch centerpiece | $180 | $400 |
The same page says labor hours times the baker's rate can explain more of a custom quote than the ingredients do, and that bakeries may fold it into a flat project fee. That matches the table above. Compare your own rows with it: at $15 an hour the small simple house ($70.16) is above the $25 to $60 latestcost gives for a 4 to 6 inch footprint, and the classic simple house ($100.49) is above the $25 to $75 bakery range, so these prices sit above small-bakery shelf houses. The classic detailed house ($126.61) sits inside the made-to-order range. If a house prices above its range, shorten the build (fewer pieces, a smaller board) and keep the hourly rate.
The same classic house at three hourly rates
Ingredients stay the same, so the rate decides how much of the price is your pay. The 40% margin and 10% overhead are unchanged.
| Classic house | $15 an hour | $20 an hour | $25 an hour |
|---|---|---|---|
| Simple | $100.49 | $121.11 | $141.74 |
| Detailed | $126.61 | $154.11 | $181.61 |
| Showpiece | $171.99 | $210.94 | $249.90 |
Before you quote it
Quote the house with its board and box in the price, and say what the board size is. A customer who wants a different candy mix or a specific building style is asking for the next decoration level, so price that row. The pieces can be baked ahead of assembly (the template site covers how far ahead to make a gingerbread house).
If you want to build a house for your own table instead, the template site works out what a gingerbread house costs to make without labor or margin. To cut the pieces for the sizes above, open the classic 6 x 8 x 4 inch size in the generator.
Gingerbread cookies instead of a house are on the Christmas cookie box page, and cookies priced by decorating minutes are on the decorated sugar cookies page. For margin versus markup, see markup vs margin. Whether you may sell baked goods from home depends on your state's cottage food rules.
