How much to charge for a cheesecake
Charge about $52.00 for a plain 9 inch cheesecake, or $33.00 for a 6 inch one. That is this page's worked example at a 40% margin: $14.62 of ingredients, a board and box, 40 minutes of work at an example $15 an hour and 10% overhead make a cake that costs $31.12. Cream cheese is 62% of the ingredient bill, so the price moves with the block you buy. The prices are examples, so put in your own.

The ranges below were read on 2026-10-21. They come from a seller-platform blog and a price guide, so they are a sense of the range and not a market rate. Check what bakers near you ask.

| This page's example, 6 inch | $33.00 | 40% margin |
The Homegrown post is written by a company that sells storefronts to food vendors, and says none of its six vendor listings states a size. Its own $45 suggestion for a 9 inch classic is a suggestion. ThePricer puts a supermarket or warehouse club whole cake at about $18 to $25, the price a buyer can compare against.
The 9 inch cheesecake, ingredient by ingredient
Chocolate Moosey's 9 Inch Classic Cheesecake uses a 9 inch springform pan, serves 8 to 10, takes 20 minutes to prep and 35 to 40 minutes to bake, then cools for an hour and chills for at least 4 hours. The page prints cups and spoons, so the graham crumbs are turned into grams with the King Arthur weight chart (1 cup is 100 g, so 2 1/2 cups is 250 g). The page lists 1 cup plus 2 tablespoons of sugar in all and 2 tablespoons for the crust, so the filling gets 1 cup. Eggs, sugar and butter use September 2026 averages from the Bureau of Labor Statistics. Cream cheese, crumbs, vanilla and salt carry a star: those are my own placeholder prices.
| Ingredient | Used | Package | Cost |
|---|---|---|---|
| Graham cracker crumbs (13.3 oz box) | 250 | $3.49 / 13.3 * | $2.31 |
| Granulated sugar (crust) | 2 | $1.02 / 1 | $0.06 |
| Butter | 6 | $3.96 / 1 | $0.74 |
| Table salt | 0.13 | $1.29 / 26 * | $0.00 |
| Full-fat cream cheese (8 oz block) | 24 | $3.00 / 8 * | $9.00 |
| Granulated sugar (filling) | 1 | $1.02 / 1 | $0.44 |
| Large eggs | 3 | $2.27 / 1 | $0.57 |
| Vanilla extract | 1 | $5.99 / 2 * | $1.50 |
| Ingredients for the batch | $14.62 | ||
The bake and the chill are not paid time, so the labor line is 40 minutes: the recipe's 20 minutes of prep plus 20 of my own for the crust, cooling, wrapping and boxing. The board and box are $3.67, the total of foil ($0.39), a 10 inch cake board ($0.59), a window box ($2.62) and a label ($0.07) in the Homegrown post's boxed-cake example, which priced them at Walmart.com on September 24, 2026. From cost to price
| Line | 9 inch | 6 inch |
|---|---|---|
| Ingredients | $14.62 | $6.50 |
| Board and box (placeholder) | $3.67 | $2.75 |
| Labor (40 and 35 min at $15, example) | $10.00 | $8.75 |
| Overhead, 10% | $2.83 | $1.80 |
| Cost to make | $31.12 | $19.80 |
| Price at a 40% margin | $51.87 | $33.00 |
The 6 inch column is my arithmetic. King Arthur and Chocolate Moosey give no 6 inch recipe here, so every 9 inch amount is multiplied by 36/81 (0.4444), the ratio of the two pan areas. That gives about 1.33 eggs, which you can't crack, so round in the kitchen and expect the cost to move by a few cents. The board and box ($2.75) and the 35 minutes of labor are my picks. Price by margin
| Margin | Matching markup | 9 inch price | 9 inch kept | 6 inch price | 6 inch kept |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| 0% (break-even) | 0% | $31.12 | $0.00 | $19.80 | $0.00 |
| 30% | 42.9% | $44.46 | $13.34 | $28.28 | $8.48 |
| 40% | 66.7% | $51.87 | $20.75 | $33.00 | $13.20 |
| 50% | 100% | $62.24 | $31.12 | $39.60 | $19.80 |
At break-even the 9 inch cake is $31.12, which is below the $45 Homegrown suggests and the $55.99 one bakery lists for a 9 inch cake, so there is room to charge a margin and stay in range. Margin and markup are not the same number, see markup vs margin for bakers.
What cream cheese does to the price
The recipe above uses 24 oz. ThePricer notes that a classic 9 inch recipe can need 32 oz, which is four blocks. The table prices both amounts at three block prices: $2.00, $3.00 (this page's placeholder) and $3.50 (the example price ThePricer uses for an 8 oz block, which it says is an illustration and not a retail quote). Everything else in the recipe stays as above, so the cost of the extra block is all that changes.
| 8 oz block | 24 oz: cost | 24 oz: price | 32 oz: cost | 32 oz: price |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| $2.00 | $27.82 | $46.37 | $30.02 | $50.03 |
| $3.00 | $31.12 | $51.87 | $34.42 | $57.37 |
| $3.50 | $32.77 | $54.62 | $36.62 | $61.03 |
If you re-price a cake when the dairy aisle changes, only that one row needs a new number. Change the cream cheese line in the calculator.
Price per slice
The recipe says 8 to 10 servings and the Homegrown post cuts a 9 inch cake into 12. The whole cake at $52.00 comes to the prices below, before any plate or clamshell for a single slice. Homegrown lists a slice at $7.00 and ThePricer a Walmart 8 oz slice at $3.98, so the cut you choose decides which of those you land near.
| Slices | Price per slice |
|---|---|
| 8 | $6.50 |
| 10 | $5.20 |
| 12 | $4.33 |

Pricing the slice, the half and the mini of one dessert is worked on pie prices: whole, slice and mini. A layered cake with decoration time on its own line is on the 6 inch cake page. Other holiday tables: pumpkin pie, apple pie and the Christmas cookie box. Cottage food rules decide whether and how you may sell a cream cheese product, which is often refrigerated, so check your state's before you take orders.
